Journey Through the Kingdom of Mengwi

One of the original nine kingdoms of Bali, Mengwi is a treasure trove of Balinese tradition. With a territory that once spread all the way to Java, Mengwi was famous for it’s strong female leaders. The ancestral palace of the kingdom and the nearby Taman Ayun Temple are still looked after by Jero Made, the fifth and last living wife of the King of Mengwi. Taman Ayun, which means beautiful garden was built in 1634 as a symbol of the unification of the kingdom and as a place for the royal family to pray.

Join Fivelements as we re-discover this ancient kingdom. Starting with a tour of the Taman Ayun temple we will explore the history of Mengwi in the architecture of this iconic structure. Then retire to the shady grounds of the nearby palace to meet with Jero Made and discuss her passion project, the cultivation and use of Balinese traditional medicines. Sit down with her to a traditional vegetarian meal served on banana leaves in the Ceremonial Bale at the palace. Then walk off your meal with a stroll in the palace gardens.
